All About Alaska

When I think of Alaska I think of a cold barren place with lots of ice and snow, and maybe some igloos. Apparently there is more to Alaska than I thought.

Located in the upper northwest region of the North American continent, Alaska is the largest U.S. state by area (larger than the combined area of the next 3 largest states: Texas, California, and Montana) and one of the wealthiest and most racially diverse. Go figure!

Alaska is actually quite a beautiful place with 17 of the top 20 highest peaks in the United States. The icy state also boasts natural wonders like the Yukon River, the third longest river in the U.S. and glaciers like Malaspina the largest in the state.

According to the official state website there are three big misconceptions about Alaska.

Weather is the #1 misconception. Over a third of all vacation/pleasure visitors found the weather better than expected. During the summer, average daytime temperatures throughout the state range from the 60s to the 90s.

Road conditions are usually better than expected. Almost the entire length of the Alaska Highway is asphalt-surfaced, and approximately half of the roads in the state’s highway system are paved.

The third misconception is price. Contrary to popular belief, prices throughout Alaska are generally quite reasonable.

Who knew Alaska could be so pleasant? Next time, I take a vacation I just go to Alaska. It sure sounds a like a great place with plenty of natural wonders to take in.

Otherwise known as the “Natural State,” Arkansas is filled with beauty, history, and fun things to do. The state’s six geographic regions are packed with exciting destinations to discover. It’s impossible not to enjoy the amazing beauty of the south’s Natural State, with scenic mountain ranges such as the Ozarks and Ouachitas to explore. Here you will find beautiful waterfalls that are enough to take anyone’s breath away. Underneath all this beauty you will find the limestone caves of the Ozarks. It’s easy to enjoy the outdoors here with over 9,000 miles of flowing streams and rivers such as the mighty Mississippi, which provide prime fishing and hunting excursions. The state’s numerous lakes encourage a variety of different water sports such as canoeing, sailing and scuba diving. Arkansas’ many parks such as Hot Springs National Park and Crater of Diamonds State Park provide many more unique and exciting opportunities to explore the outdoors. The history of Arkansas can be discovered with the help of museums, cultural centers, state parks, battlefields, and historic cemeteries. Arkansas nightlife in popular cities such as Little Rock and Fort Smith allow you to enjoy live music, restaurants, shops, and entertainment from some well-known performers. Arkansas restaurants serve generous portions of southern cuisine. And what dinner would be complete without a refreshing glass of wine, from the largest and oldest wine-producing state in the south. So whether you are looking to surround yourself in a little southern history, experience the natural beauty of the outdoors, or just relax with some old-fashioned southern cuisine and a glass of wine, Arkansas is the place to go.
